Cycas revoluta or Sago palm

The Sago Cycas Revelouta Plant is an excellent plant for inexperienced gardeners. The sago palm grows primarily in the landscape across the southern states but also grown as an indoor house plant.

Commonly called the “sago palm” or “king sago palm” they are one of those plants that look like a palm – like the ponytail palm – but is not a palm but a cycad (Cycas revoluta).

is an evergreen plant native to Japan and China. Despite its palm-like appearance, it is not a true palm but belongs to an ancient family called Cycadaceae, dating back over 200 million years. This slow-growing plant has become a popular ornamental choice for homes and landscapes, thriving in tropical and subtropical regions. The name "revoluta" refers to the curled or rolled back nature of its leaves, a distinctive feature of this plant.

Leaves

The leaves of Cycas revoluta are pinnately compound, glossy green, and arranged in a rosette pattern. These fronds can grow anywhere from 3 to 7 feet long, depending on the plant’s age. Each frond is composed of stiff, leathery leaflets that are narrow, lanceolate, and have sharp, spiny tips. The leaf edges are revolute (curled backward), giving the plant its characteristic name. New leaves emerge soft and light green, but as they mature, they harden into a darker, glossy green. The lower leaflets tend to resemble spines, adding to the plant’s distinct texture.

The Sago Cycas Revelouta Plant produces cones and bears attractive, palm-like feathery foliage making it very similar looking to palms, and tree ferns.

Called a prehistoric plant, sago palms with strong natural defenses against predators adapts to a wide variety of conditions.
