The fruit is a berry, known as a grape; in the wild species it is 6 mm diameter and ripens dark purple to blackish with a pale wax bloom; in cultivated plants it is usually much larger, up to 3 cm long, and can be green, red, or purple. Popular Spanish Red Wine Grapes
Tempranillo
Tempranillo is the king of Spanish red wine grapes, producing bold wines with flavors of red fruit, tobacco, leather, and spices. It’s most commonly associated with the Rioja and Ribera del Duero regions, where it thrives in both hot and cool climates. Tempranillo wines range from youthful and fruity to complex and oak-aged.
Garnacha (Grenache)
Garnacha, known internationally as Grenache, is another prominent Spanish red grape. It’s typically lighter and more fruit-forward than Tempranillo, with flavors of red berries, white pepper, and herbs. Garnacha thrives in Spain’s warmer regions, including Priorat and Campo de Borja.
Monastrell (Mourvèdre)
Monastrell is a powerful, full-bodied grape that produces wines with deep flavors of dark fruit, chocolate, and spice. It’s most commonly grown in the southeastern regions of Jumilla and Yecla.
Mencía
Grown primarily in the northwest region of Galicia, Mencía produces medium-bodied wines with bright acidity and flavors of cherry, raspberry, and minerals. It’s a lesser-known but highly regarded grape, offering a fresh and elegant alternative to Spain’s bigger reds.
